PARTLY due to the government push to promote Indian systems of medicine and native sciences, and partly due to the failings of allopathic medicine, there has been a steady drift towards Ayurveda in recent times.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system, based on natural healing ideas and herbal based medicine. Unlike popular belief, it is a system that is codified and time-tested, and that has documented chapters even on surgery.

The drift towards Ayurveda

To see the shift towards Ayurveda, a visit to the Vaidya Health Care Hospital in Kerala may be in order. The hospital is located a little off Perumbavoor town in Ernakulum, Kerala. Along with Ayurvedic remedies, the hospital also offers other forms of native health and healing services to its patients.

In under 10 years, Vaidya has become a major health care centre, drawing traffic not only from across India but also from countries of West and South Asia, Americas and Europe.

We do get to see many patients affected by long-term diseases and disorders,says Dr Kiran B Nair, the director of Vaidya Hospital. Most of them chose Ayurveda over Allopathy fearing the side-effects of English medicines. Others, because they found no cure, only temporary relief, using the latter.

Dr Kiran’s observation finds backing in the International Ayurvedic Medical Journal (IAMJ) survey. It says, people still prefer Allopathic medicine over the Ayurvedic in cases of emergency. However, in cases of long-drawn and common ailments, Ayurveda runs ahead.

IAMJ survey quote:

System of medicine preferred during emergency

Allopathic

79%

Ayurveda

20%

Homeopathy

1%

System of medicine preferred during common ailments.

Allopathic

35%

Ayurveda

48%

Homeopathy

17%

Why are people turning away from Allopathy?

The survey says, people are becoming weary of modern system (synthetic drugs) because:

• They offer only symptomatic relief;

• They have little to offer for patients with chronic ailments;

• They have frustrating side-effects; and

• They are expensive.
